Napkins, and particularly linen napkins, were used at tea time, for coffee time and for lunch and dinner and even in the 1800's for “drinks” before dinner. Each occasion would have a napkin size specifically for it. Cocktail napkins would be much smaller and daintier than those used at the grand Edwardian Dinners where 8 courses were the norm and a very large double damask napkin would traditionally be used.
The term "damask fabric" was named after the city of Damascus , where it originated before the 12th century. In the beginning it was made of silk mixed with cotton (a surprisingly strong mix), or even silk mixed with wool or linen. It is woven in such a way so that intricate designs are discernable and when one holds the fabric up to the light, one can see the beauty of the weaving and of the design itself. The woven napkin designs can be anything from springs of flowers, animals at play, angels in heaven or even the coat of arms of the family for which the napkins are to be destined. Sometimes the weaver will leave a small weavers mark such as a clover or a flower in the corner so that one can determine the actual weaver - although this is rare to find today.
Monograms were added to reflect either the initials of the husband or that of the lady of the house. These were embroidered as part of a dowry - a legacy of linens passed down from family to family or newly created to mark a marriage in the offing. The monograms may well have been embroidered by the betrothed lady herself or have been ordered from an "embroidery house" where they would be commissioned for the family or an occasion. Generally anything with a crown means it comes from a royal household and often the treasure of any collection.
