A layover pillow sham is a pillow covering which would have been laid over the pillow. It was usually highly embroidered and of the finest cloth. These are of the finest linen damask money can buy. The workmanship is absolutely stunning. Circa 1880's. It measures 35” wide x 29” high (89cm x 74cm) and has three drawn border squares – one within another. The drawn thread work around the monogram is so special that one can hardly believe that one could achieve such delicate work by hand. Although today there is little use for lay over shams – it would however make a lovely table centre piece with the colour of wood showing through the thread work. A really special piece.
